A  SHORT  HISTORY

Nostalgia is a combination of the old and the new . . .

The Farmhouse—In 1720 Simon Mathew and his brother in law Simon Butler, settled in the town of Society, later know as Barndtsville,

Whitehallville,  and finally Chalfont.

Both of these Welsh emigrant were evidently men of

intelligence and enterprise. Being among the first to settle in this

wilderness, the township was so named New Britain  in their honour.

Simon Mathew was equipped with a trade—that of a

Millwright. He began the building of his Plantation in 1720 on 147 acres In 1723, along with his brother in law, he

proceeded to erect a flouring mill on Pine Run—just 200 paces from the Plantation. To obtain sufficient fall to propel the mill, a racecourse was dug across the front of the

Plantation—the remains of which can be seen today.

Simon gave his attention more particularly to farming,

because that was the occupation he understood. Along with his wife and children, he enjoyed many fruitful and happy years at the Plantation until his death in 1753 at the age of 70.

The Grande Celebration Room and lobby were added in 1985. At this time the farmhouse was restored—notice the original beams, the lovely pine floors and the English tiles in the fireplace hearth!

We hope you will feel the warmth of Simon Mathews’

hospitality while celebrating your happy occasion at
